My picks for the top CDs by area artists in 2014:

Best Pop/Rock CD/Album of the Year: “Later That Night” by Rod MacDonald (rodmacdonald.net). Some of MacDonald’s best releases feature serious subject matter, but this one is lighter. Sure, the ballad “Many Can’t Be Moved” boldly addresses the 2012 Newtown school shooting, yet topics from religion (“Hole in the Bible”) to politics (“Young Republicans in Love”) get treated humorously. Bassist/guitarist Mark Dann, keyboardist Professor Louie, banjoist Mike Merenda and drummer Dan Hickey also help him break new ground on the zydeco-influenced “Don’t Come Knocking.”

See Rod MacDonald with George Goehring, Nicole Yarling and Ellen Bukstel in “My Life in the Brill Building” at 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Arts Garage, 180 NE First St., Delray Beach ($25-35, 561-450-6357), and at 8 p.m. on Dec. 26 at The Living Room, 1709 N. Congress Ave., Boynton Beach (561-742-4399).
