Music Americana: The roots of rock and roll

Course description:
    From blues, jazz, gospel and country music, uniquely American musicians such as Count Basie, Sinatra, Les Paul, Little Richard, and Elvis created new sounds and new generations of fans, an explosion of energy into a new music, full of rhythym and excitement. As the Beatles, Bob Dylan and contemporary artists add lyricism and guitar wizardry to the mix, it's truer than ever: "rock and roll is here to stay.”    
    This course will examine this dynamic and entertaining music through the work and biographies of rock and roll pioneers, with performances on video, cd, and live.

Vocalists With A Sweet Spot--Frank Sinatra, Moonglows, Big Mama Thornton

Rhthym, Blues & Race-- Fats Domino, Little Richard, Pat Boone
Lecture 4:
Guys With Guitars --Les Paul, Bill Haley & The Comets, Chuck Berry
Lecture 5:
Enter The King--Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Connie Francis
Lecture 6:
The Crooners--The Platters, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison
Lecture 7:
Folk Rock & The British Invasion--Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Bob Marley
Lecture 8:
Acoustic Music--James Taylor, Eric Clapton

Biographical Information:
Rod MacDonald began his singing career in Greenwich Village nightclubs in New York City, before moving to Florida in 1995. Named “Best Local Acoustic Performer”in Broward and Palm Beach counties by New Times, and one of “Ten magnificent musicians of Palm Beach County”by the Palm Beach Post, he plays regularly in south Florida and tours in North America, Europe and Australia. He has previously taught Lifelong Learning courses Folksinging in Modern Times and Milestones in American Music.
