The Great American Songbook

Do you ever wonder how great songs play like a soundtrack through your life? Studying such pioneers as Louis Armstrong, Cole Porter, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, the Doors and others, with videos, research and live performance, we will build a Great American Songbook of the songs we remember so deeply, toward a new understanding of these artists and our own soundtrack.

This course will examine the work, biographies and importance of these singers and songs, and attempt to sort myth from reality, using cds, live videos and excerpts from feature films, live performances and a few surprises.

Living Jazz & Blues: Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Stormy Weather

The High Life: Cole Porter, Johnny  Mercer, Hoagy Carmichael
